An experimental short story written by drawing the Epic battles cards from Arkham horror at random and writing the flavor text of each one. Enevitably I will have to change bits and peices to make the story flow coherently, I will try not to alter the text too much.
Changes will be signified by [sqaure brackets].
[glow=red,2,300]THE END.[/glow]
A tree came hurtling through the air towards us with terrible force, I threw myself to the ground, but not everyone was so lucky. As I staggered to my feet, I could hear the soft sobs of one of my companions as he bled out his final moments.
Laughing and half insane, I prepared to attack the thing, but with an impossible contortion, it tore the [gun] out of my hands, to be lost into the night. Dumbfounded I stared down at my empty hands for a moment, then I laughed again, My through growing hoarse as I looked around for somthing else to fight with.
I knew, in that one horrible instant thath the gods of man would not be coming to our aid this day. We where naked and alone in the universe against that terrible force. I screamed a horrible rage at the injustice of it all.
[All the while] we could feel it rummaging horribly through our minds and with a scream, one of our number, I [did] not see who, turned his gun on himself. Weeping and blinded by the blood in my eyes, I screamed "HERE IT COMES!"
Seeming to grow desperate, [Perhaps it found somthing in our minds, perhaps it was toying with us], [However] the beast surged towards us with a burst of speed [strait into my comrades enchanted spear]. Panting we rested there for a moment as the creature contorted in agony.
Then with a crackle of energy, the creature shot forward to attack us [again] before we where ready, but in truth, it could have taken a lifetime to attack and we would never have been ready. In this moment, I reached out and twisted with my mind, pulling the crackling energy from the air and channeling it through the spell I was casting.
[Somthing was wrong, the spell seemed to have no effect, But] We braced ourselves, there was no telling what the creature would do next.
What had come before was nothing compared to the trial we were subjected to next. One at a time, the crawling chaos simply looked into our hearts and whispered "Join me".
[Panicking] We knew the plan was wild and reckless, but what else could we do? The battle was hopeless anyway. [As I attmepted to get the beasts attention, my commrade circled around the beasts flank. Lashing out with a tentical, The beast caught me square in the chest before using another two to rip its assailent limb from limb.] I slumped against a [nearby] tree, The plan was in shambles, and we'd lost another comrade in the attempt. Hopless, It was all hopeless.
[Slapping myself, "Get it together man" I stearnly ordered myself. Suprised by my force of will], the thing faultered for a moment and we fell upon it with all the force we could muster praying that it would be enough.
[But] as I watched in horror, the creatures wounds began to close before my very eyes. Inexplicably, where I should have felt dispair, I instead grew angry. "DIE! YOU HAVE TO DIE" I railed at the creature.
[Then] Abruptly, I saw what was happening. We where dancing to the beasts tune without even realising it. I tried to warn the others, but the jaws of the trap where already closing upon us. I could only hope that we could somehow salvage the situation, But it was too late there was nothing we could do in the face of the creatures fury as it struck at us, again and again.
[Siezing an oppertunity, one of] my friends pressed his attack driving the creature back as he moved closer to its gaping jaw. I knew he was too close too it, but before I could shout a warning, he was gone.
above us [for any sign of hope, but] the stars whirled madly, and for a long moment my ears heard no sound except my own heartbeat. Staring into the awful emptiness of space, a terrible calm settled over me. Perhaps there was still one small chance [to survive].
It was then, [in that final moment of clarity that] I remebered a terrible thing. The beast had a thousand faces of which to battle us, all at once if it should so choose, [it was then in that Final moment that] the strain was too great and I collapsed to my knees murmering terrible words, My voice growing louder with every repitition. "IA! IA! NYARLATHOTEP FTHAGN! PH'NGLUI MGLW'NFAH. NYARLATHOTEP R'LYEH WGAH'NAGL FTHAGN!"
